A hand painted book that I am working on for school with the reference image above. Any criticisms welcome.

If I were you I would make the decorative stuff on the cover of the book much thicker and I would give the overall book some more shape. The concept is heavily stylized so you have to really push the shape/silhouette of the model.

I agree with Pigart. 

You could definitely exaggerate the thickness of the details on the front to match the thickness of the cover itself.

Another thing I would consider, are the pages. You could look into creating edge loops around the pages and extrude some out to begin defining pages as the concept does.  Similar to this, but better ofcourse, I literally did this in 2 mins xD https://i.gyazo.com/e4c14d844c1056a4cb52f9d9aa6cbe3b.png

Agreed on the above, blow out that embossing and really make it look like there is a face there.   Also carve in the wood around the face...

It would also be neat to Lattice the final mesh, to give it a nice subtle bend in the same ways the concept has.

That's a lovely concept! Now I'm really curious for the outcome. And I too think you should thicken the pan symbol.

Thank you for all of the comments and critiques, I will definitely keep them in mind as I move forward with this project. In the mean time I also have to work on this
