So I have been sculpting in sculptris for some time now but now I need something with a little more power, And since Zbrush is $700 I was wondering if Mudbox was a valid choice.
Autodesk is currently moving over most (if not all) of Mudbox's tools to Maya. So soon enough, if you're a Maya user, there might not be a need for a separate program. If you don't use Maya, or if the tools aren't powerful enough for you yet, Mudbox is a great tool, but in my mind, not as awesome as Zbrush. Though I hear the texturing tools in Mudbox are miles ahead of those in zbrush. But mudbox doesn't have zremesher or dynamesh, which really put zbrush over the top for me. But, really, mudbox is just fine for the price, if zbrush is too expensive. You can do pretty much anything you want, sculpting-wise, in either program.
i think you'd really have to wait for how the maya integration of these tools turns out before calling mudbox EOL-ed. mudbox right now is pleasantly simple and seems to generally work. the bets are off as to how well an assimilation can work and how many features will get dropped in the process. >:)
in my opinion there is however no real contest between mudbox and zbrush. the former only wins in texturing (and that can be done elsewhere at least as well).
i use and love mudbox. I occasionally use zbrush for things that mudbox doesn't handle well, but for pure sculpting, i prefer mudbox's camera, the way the brushes handle and the way i can modify my brushes, as well as the layer system and painting tools

and you wont get subD (levels) sculpting in maya in the near future...

its definitely valid choice.
for me the selling point of mudbox is the UI, layer system, painting tools and vdm (vector displacement map).
even with zbrush with 64bit it still cannot handle as much polygons on a single mesh than mudbox, given that you have the hardware for it.
