Adelie and the Obelisk Looking for 3D Modelers and Animators

Hello Everyone!


I’m the Team Lead on Adelie and the Obelisk, an Action 2.5D Platformer game being developed at the University of Southern California (USC). We are currently looking to add a 3D Character Modeler and a 3D Animator to our development team.


Adelie and the Obelisk is a story-driven 2.5D “penguin platformer” that challenges the player to swim, slide, and sprint their way through a primordial wilderness overtaken by the predatory forces of Night. Our unwitting hero must combat the fantastic creatures that threaten his homeworld on his journey to restore the corrupted temples of Light.

Working on Adelie is an opportunity to collaborate with a team of talented and highly motivated game developers and to have your work seen by recruiters at the top game companies. We are developing Adelie in a class called Advanced Games Project (AGP) -- the senior thesis and capstone project for students at USC. At the end of Fall and Spring semester (december and may), Adelie will be showcased at an industry-sponsored event at USC called “Demo Day”. USC is the top rated game school in the country and, because of this, all of the large game companies send recruiters to attend Demo Day. Common attendees include Blizzard, Activision, EA, Ubisoft, Riot Games, Sony, Microsoft, Nintendo, and many more.


Our industry sponsors for AGP include, Danny Bilson (Vice-President of EA), Richard Lemarchand (Lead Designer on Uncharted), and Scott Easley (Senior Animator on Oddworld).


Adelie is a strongly art driven game. We’re looking for modelers and animators who have a large creative ambition to help develop and breathe life into our characters, specifically our main character, Adelie. Our animation style is fluid and robust. We are not looking for puppeted 2D animations. Instead, we want an animator who can create smooth, emotionally driven animations that are clearly perceptible at a small size. Our main goal is to capture the beauty and charm of games like Ori and the Blind Forest and Zelda, while telling a story as deep and meaningful as Princess Mononoke and The Lion King.


Please note that, while our game is strictly 2.5D, our characters will be modeled and animated in 3D. These 3D animations will then be rendered and exported to sprite sheets that will play in our 2.5D environment.
