Hello,

i have some problems with masking in zbrush.

1. If i extract something and i want to mask an area of the extracted object, it masked the back too. Why is that so and how can i avoid that?

2. If i extract something and want, that it is "One Sided", not Double Sided, it never works. Whatever i click or change, it is ALWAYS Double Sided

3. Is my workflow for armour a good workflow?
-1. Extract
-2. Dynamesh at a high level
-3. Shape the armour
-4. When finished, retopo the armour and project details???

    1. That is because Zbrush has problems with thin surfaces unless you turn on Backface masking [Brush > Automasking > BackfaceMasking] for your masking brush.

    2. Double sided refers to the thickness being applied to both sides or just one side and not to whether it has a geometric backside, if you want cleaner true one sided extracts try to extract using Panel Loops without polish or bevel!

    3. There are so many workflows in Zbrush that whatever works for you is a good one. Personally I don't extract for armour and instead just copy the body, cut off the parts I don't need and inflate some and start sculpting and doing a bit of zremeshing... there are countless options though depending on the stage you are in - concepting, or trying to get a clean final version and so on.

Hello and thank you so much to answer my questions Salem!

But to number one...! It doesnt work. I turn of "BackfaceMaking" and its the same problem. It masks the backside and i dont un derstand why

I made a post similar to this recently. What I got from the post, is that it isn't possible to disable masking through objects. You have to hide the parts you don't want masked.

Well, depends on the mask brush you use. Lasso will always go through the whole object, but mask pen will not if you turn BackfaceMasking on for it! So if you have trouble getting it to work with the mask pen make sure you hit ctrl before you enter the brush menu and turn the masking on, else it will only turn it on for the active sculpting brush!

IT WORKED!!!!!!!!!!!!! HAHAH ;-)!!! Yahhh!!! Finnaly after 2 months of frustration :-)!

    1. Hit CTRL
    2. Go with the mouse on "Brush" and " Backfascemasking".
    3. Worked for me!
    4. That is the complicated thing i have done in my life, in history of programmes, only to hide the mask in the background... oh !

    Thank you so much Saberhagen!!!!
