Visionaries, concept artists, idealists, and starry-eyed dreamers! Now is your chance to imagine, paint and define the new arenas of the Unreal Tournament!

The folks at Epic Games have begun the development of the next generation of the Unreal Tournament. They are rebuilding classic levels that you know and love as well as creating new playgrounds to battle each other in. Epic is giving the gaming community a chance at helping them do this.

Unreal Tournament is being developed using Unreal Engine 4 in the open in close collaboration between Epic and the community.  When the game is playable, it will be free.  Not free to play, just free. Click here for more details.

For this contest, artists will be creating 2D illustrated concepts of environmental themes and/or levels for Epic Games’ recently announced Unreal Tournament.

Contestants are welcome to explore and experiment with new themes for the Tournament. New takes on the older iconic themes of UT are also welcomed.

Epic has provided a series of images of some basic level block outs; both new and old, to potentially be used by artists participating in this contest when developing their themes and ideas. Using these shots is by no means a requirement and all artists are free to develop their own concepts as they see fit. Included in that ZIP file is a breakdown of existing Unreal Tournament themes. This is not meant as a set of strict guidelines for your own efforts. It’s to give you some insight into what Epic has done in the past and what they are looking for when they are considering your themes.

  • The deadline for entries is August 4th, 2014 23:59 PST (GMT -7).

  • One person per entry; no team entries.

  • When you are ready to submit your final entry for this contest, please do so here, in the UTMC: Concept Art 'Final Submission' thread. Be sure to follow the rules posted within.

  • The art work submitted to this contest must be made originally for this contest. No existing art work or concepts will be accepted.

  • Epic Games will be the sole judge of the contest and their judgement will be final.

Epic Games prizes

  • All entries that Epic chooses as a winner will receive a round of feedback from Chris Perna, Art Director at Epic Games. You will then have the opportunity to produce a few more concepts to fully flesh out your vision for the theme or level.

  • All entries that Epic Games accepts for use will receive official credit as a ‘Concept Artist’ on the new Unreal Tournament game.

  • Any entry submitted to the contest has a chance to be featured in an upcoming Unreal Tournament art book to be published by Epic. Each artist who had a winning entry will have an opportunity to write about their entry. As well, they will receive a hard copy of the book signed by the team at Epic.

Polycount prizes

  • All winning entries will receive a full size Greentooth Trophy

  • Polycount will also pick a single entry as our own favorite and award them with one of the following of the winner’s choice: A New-generation console (Xbox One or PS4) or Occulus Rift DK2 kit. If you are outside of North America, you will receive the cash equivalent.
