Play! 2011 International Art Competition

Play!, the online artist portfolio site, has announced that they are now taking entries for their annual contest.

They have categories that cover pretty much all facets of modern entertainment, but I do encourage you to look through their rules first before packing up your latest efforts and shipping it off to them. Specifically no student or self promotional works are allowed, which I'm sure will make a few of you unhappy. Never the less, they are offering over 18k USD in prizes and you have till June 20th to get your entries in; May 18th if you want to save 10 bucks on your entry fee.

They say no student works. Does that mean that since I'm a student I can't enter or does it mean anything for school? Wacky...

Meh, this is only for people/companies who have done art for games that have been published already, also you gotta have permission to post any paid art. Forget entering this contest... I'm looking forward checking out the entries, though.

I'm pretty sure they're looking for professional work only.

"Professional images and animations from any country used in the professional production or advertising of published video games, toy products and entertainment assets between January 1, 2010 and June 30, 2011 are eligible for entry. No student or self-promotional works will be accepted."

This is sort of like Enter the Pixel - its for professionals only with released content. We have as many pro's here at Polycount as we do students, so don't be surprised if/when this sort of news pops up

The toy products aspect leaves a loophole if anyone really wanted to get into this, create a character sculpt, have it printed and sell a copy....I couldn't see anywhere in the rules that you cant be self employed.

Spacemonkey's excelent mutant piece for instance, could be elidgable in this way.

(note, this could be a nefarious scheme to get my hands on a copy of that print......if you are reading this Tim, I'm first in line )

So there's a competition for art that people were already paid to make? Shouldn't it be awards rather than a competition considering the variety of stuff is so wildly different? ...sounds kinda ass backwards to me.

Agree with ceebee. Professional work competes in the marketplace anyway.
