For those of you who have been hiding under a rock, a few days ago Polycount officially withdrew from the Dominance War contest. Despite the bad news, the Polycount community was given some good news that we'll be hosting our very own contest.
Since the announcement was made, we've worked hard to get this this contest off the ground and to have it ready for you guys as soon as we possibly could, seeing as the Polycount community was really eager to get started on something. So kids, the BRAWL Tournament is live and ready to rock your face into next Thursday.
BRAWL is a 3D Character and Environment Contest where you as artists are required to choose a FIGHTER or a STAGE from a fighting game of your choice (think Street Fighter, Mortal Kombat, Guilty Gear, Tekken, etc) and you are required to re-imagine your selected FIGHTER or STAGE. What does this mean exactly? Well, imagine if Street Fighter was based on the Wild West. What would the characters and environments look like? What if Mortal Kombat was set in a Victorian Steampunk setting? The possibilities are only limited to your imagination.
So quit stalling, because I know you want to get cracking on this just as much as I do.
The contest deadline is May 6th, 2011 @ 11:59PM EST.
Best of luck to everyone and see you out there!
We'll get a proper banner ad so the contest page is more accessible but for now, please see below.

Deadline is gonna be tiiiight.
I'm wondering about how strict 'reimagining' should be. Do we have to copy an environment into a new setting? Keep the layout? or just the feel of it? How far can we go creating our own thing?
I guess there's no real way to draw a line, so I'm thinking use best judgement. Unfortunatly I don't know shit about fighting games. RESEARCH TIME.
Hope i have time after work ^^ (for me , it's most interesting , i like it )
Cant decide...
Cant decide...
BRAIN ANEURYSM
Shame no 2D option.
Round one....FIGHT!
Prizes for the BRAWL Tournament are fairly simple: There aren’t any.
If you entered this contest for some cash, a gift card, some t-shirts or hardware then you’ve come to the wrong place. At Polycount we try and push each other as artists and superficial items will not be your motivation this time around. Will we
have prizes in the future? Perhaps, but for now Polycount’s BRAWL Tournament is for the sake of videogame art alone."
And this is why the contest is completely legit. Creating art for the sake of art, inspiration and passion.
but super stoked to see everyone else gets in there! i hope people go for some old school fighters! it would be great to see some revamps of samuri showdown or eternal champions.
It's probably not exactly what you're looking for, but you could team up with an environment artist and put together a solid concept
*Teams are allowed. Up to TWO 3D environment artists maximum.

My point? Hopefully you'll still enter because the contest sounds like fun
LOL
so true, so true.
make a soldier for a future war, it can be human, alien, or robot.
anyway, i do love me some guilty gear!
fades... into.... space.... i blame the pentagon.
Maybe I'll join in and widdle away between school and contracts.
Thereby hampering any chance of winning.
This sounds seriously awesome, and I'm really looking forward to seeing things progress. Cheers to the polycount team for putting this together so quickly - and as well, for doing it with all the right goals in mind.
Why not use this as an opportunity to do some simple 3d billboard type things? Just use alpha planes for various layers of the scene/stage and paint up some the bits of the scene to go on them? Could be a very unique look.
Traduction for 2D artists (as myself) : Just do some crazyyyyyyy stuff even if we can't participate in this contest !!!!
(maybe in an off-contest 2D post if it's ok with the admins of course ^^)
