Gamasutra spoke with the folks at Valve and some of the contest winners about their first payout from the first 2 weeks of the Polycount Pack items - being up for sale.
Today, Valve said that community content creators Rob Laro, Shawn Spetch, Steven Skidmore, Spencer Kern and Shaylyn Hamm took home initial royalty payments ranging from $39,000 to $47,000 each from the first round of Team Fortress 2 content creation. And these are just the checks from the first few weeks of operation
I never knew it could be so hard to type with a grin the size of which I have right now. This. Is. FANTASTIC.
As if you didn't need to know the winning entries were badass enough, you - the community - were able to show it. The idea of purchasing items came as a surprise to the TF2 community when the Mann-conomy Update was released earlier this year, which included the Polycount Pack. It ended up being a huge win for everyone involved, and we at Polycount couldn't be happier for the winners.

Can any of the artists mentioned confirm this ? I can barely believe it
(maybe with the minecraft 100 skins)
really happy for them and that this is even possible, i guess if a follow-up contest will be done, everyone wil quit their dayjobs and focus on this haha
So is Valve going to putting all "accepted" add ons up as micro-transactions? That's pretty slick if so.

Oh it's true. Spencer and I just got back from Valve. Much love to those guys for treating us like their own in Seattle. Robin, Doug, and Gabe are all great guys. (same with everyone we met at Valve)
I am immensely proud to be a member of this community, and seeing the success of great artists like this only encourages me to improve my own abilities. Congrats, guys. I hope to see many more similar news updates!
cause i'd like to try my hand at it.
