Spaceship!

Hey, I'm trying to create a spaceship, but I'm finding it pretty hard to work with. I don't really know how people go about making them since I haven't seriously done any before, I also can't find any tutorials that are good, the ones that I do find are really beginner level, so If anyone knows any good tutorials feel free to link them. Here is what I have so far, it's some kind of liquid transporter and I'm going for a bit of an eve feel. I seriously don't know how to go about it so any tip would be helpful.

Here is a little update, I'm still struggling but I think it is getting a bit better now.

I would look up greebles it makes your surface of your mesh look more complicated then it actually is and it may help make it more detailed. I would also look into creating small items like wires and things of that nature to help add more detail.

Thanks for the reply, I am about to add some of that when I go into texturing. I was thinking about making them in 3d but it seems like an absolute nightmare to bake something like that. I'm not sure what is common practice when it comes to that but I saw some people creating it directly in the texture.

Hey, I'm slowly chugging along with this, here is the current version. I'll probably do a little bit more and then more on to texturing. I'd love to get some suggestions!

Hey, I'm struggling with making these greeble shapes, don't know why, but I am, so any tip would be helpful. I pretty much try to follow the principle of primary, secondary and tertiary shapes. Here is what it looks like atm.

Looking nice! I think some parts are a little too shiny though. In the last image those black cylindrical shapes are super shiny!

Sure, here they are, I'll adjust them when I start working on it tomorrow, I kind of like the amount of gloss but I might tone it down a bit.

Looks good but I think its missing some AO definition (where is your AO map?). Maybe ramp up the ambient occlusion to make the details pop more? Also it would be awesome if you put it in space (not so noisy) with maybe a laser beam shooting out of its weapons?

I'll see what I can do about AO, I never baked it since I drew the greebles in photoshop, If you have a suggestion on how to do that feel free to suggest it. I plan of setting it in space for the final presentation, right now I use a map that is clear. The stuff on the front is antennas and stuff though so I wont put any lasers there though I might have something come out of the engines.

What are you presenting it in? Marmoset Toolbag and UE4 have AO options that don't even need AO maps. You can use those to occlude not only the greebles but the different parts of the ship and help separate elements.

Oh, well that I know, I'm using marmoset and just forgot to start the AO when I booted up this morning. I think the result is generally way better if you bake it though.

This maybe a little late, but if this is a drone then it looks great, but if not maybe someplace for a pilot and an entrance for a pilot or something similar to that? Otherwise it looks really good!

That's correct, It's supposed be a transport shop, namely transporting liquids. That's the reason i didn't add anything like specific doors or stuff of that nature.

Here is some presentation, tell me what you think! I ended up not using a space environment, I looked for it but couldn't find any that I liked. What i'm using at the moment is just some canyon that gave away some nice lighting.

Looks more lively now with the lighting, shadows and engine flares! Good job!

I can pin point why it feels so tiny to me, maybe adding something like windows with a subtle emissive map could help? The detail pieces on the white parts of the body also look huge for something built by man, maybe breaking those pieces of into smaller bits would help too. Maybe this can help clarify what I mean, your piece and Marks have similar composition.

yeah definitely needs a detail pass of little lights and windows, I cant tell the scale of this thing and those giant flames out the back make me think its quite small too. heres some good reference for the little lights
