Hello everyone! I'm working on the monthly challenge for October and I decided to start a thread for the development of my environment because I'm not getting the amount of critique I wished for and I'm really trying to take this environment and myself to the next level so I can put it in my portfolio. So please critique this to death! no sugar coating at all. I want tips and advice on how to make this better. Most recent progress:
I feel the wood texture looks a little noisy. I'd say you should vary the texture on the wood. Give it some wear and tear, aging, battle damage and stuff like that. I'd personally add dirt stains, dried mud, scratches, etc toward the bottom of those wooden towers.
Also I'd recommend adding a prop like a flag to hang on the tower somewhere or a standing base with a flag that can be placed on ground level. You can make some Chinese dynasty red or purple colored warlord banners or something like that. Anyway, great job so far! Keep up the good work!
Yeah I'm definitely going to vary up the wood texture it looks way to repeated! There's still a lot of parts I need to put in! Flags are definitely on the list. Thanks for the feedback I'm adding scratches and dirt to the wood right now!
Okay so here's a decent sized update! More crits please! and suggestions! Still have some structures to do in the background and some props to give a sense of life to the environment.
Finally took the time to hop in zbrush for the prop piece on the gate. I haven't done a whole lot of sculpting (just rocks until today) Heres the update.
Looking good. The stone texture on the wall is something I think has been overlooked. It's very underwhelming, doesn't have very good normals on it. I feel the same way about the wooden vents that are on it. Please put more work into this.
Also, try adding a few arrow shafts stocking out of those barricades. Might be a nice touch.
Thanks I definitely overlooked the stone texture. I think I made a good upgrade. I fixed some of the harsh lighting that was causing those extreme shadows that didn't fade at all. I'm also reworking all the wood textures... again lol I'm trying to tone down on their noisiness and add some better height information in the wood.
I really like your wood texture, it's awesome! I have to admit that I like your previous composition more. It made you look at the end of the tent row, which serves as some kind of focal point, Now it's gone completely.

Agreed, previous composition look less forced. Nice work on the modelling and texturing and etc. though!
