Problem
When I do a complete bake using mental ray and putting a ambient material on my model with a skylight in the scene and a box where the model sits in the bake comes out graining even those my sample is way up any ideas?
Did you adjust the number of rays per sample on the skylight? I usually just use scanline, but the same settings apply for mental ray, I think.
20 (the default) can be a little grainy, esp. when you're baking in a bucket. I usually do test bakes ~10 and up to 30+ for final depending on size and time allotted to the bake.
Humm... that seems like kind crazy setup to get AO? Is there some reason you're baking an AO material to a complete map?
Normally people just set an output type to AO, if you render a complete map it will capture the scene lighting which if you don't have any lights in the scene, it will change depending on where your camera is.
