Showreel?

So i've been wondering, whats good to have in a showreel? A character? Environments? Single objects? Really ambitious things that took forever and look amazing or things that look good but took short amounts of time in comparison? Does this change depending on the job you're applying for or should you just make one showreel for it all?

Kinda looking to start making things for a showreel and figured it'd be good to ask this before I for example go out and make something that takes forever and is not a good idea to be in a showreel.

show reels only make sense, in my opinion , for animation and specific cases where you can only showcase your work thru a video.

So , if its still characters etc just make still images :P simple !

Yeah, showreels are really only important for animators (I think). As for what to put in a showreel/portfolio it depends on what kind of role you want in industry. If you want to be a character artist then show characters, but if you want to do environment art then show some environments etc. It's best to focus on one discipline and try and get some really strong pieces.

Or, use Marmoset 3d viewer in Artstation or Verold. Even youtube has an interactive 3d viewer for enviro or single model.

Any suggestions for some nice assets that are decently easy for a person who hasn't been modeling and texturing too long yet are still enough to show off skill if done right?

showreels are good for animators and fx artist or anything that needs to show motion. If you are just modeling and texturing you only need to show stills when applying for a job.

mailboxes, fire hydrants, combat knives, arcade cabinets, gym lockers, subway turn styles, guitar, anything you might find in a kitchen. You can end up with an awesome portfolio of simple objects if you texture them right.

Guns, knives, anatomy busts, etc. These things are popular and can look rly good without complexity..
