Quickest and most effecient way to rig a simple character?

I've been really struggling to grasp how to use bones in 3DS Max, I follow a tutorial and then right at the point where he started using IK it went over my head.

I need to rig this simple character, it's going to be really basic, similar to a minecraft model where the leg, arms and torso are one single bone. Anyway I tried working with bones and again got stuck, so instead tried a biped, but the problem is is that the bipeds have far too many bones for what needs to be a simple rig.

Is there any other methods I could use to simply rig this guy?

I also need to be able to connect different hair pieces and noses to the rig so there are a variation of characters.
