I'm doing an art test atm. I have to do a dire wolf. A dire wolf if you didn't know is a prehistoric wolf. (like a gray wolf but bigger) Here is what I have so far. Give me your thoughts and crtics. If you have done animals before let me know about how to sculpt the fur or make the fur. Whether that be making hair cards or using a special brush or alpha. Would love to know. If there is any other tips on doing animals let me know also

Thanks

do you have a particular dire wolf you are referencing?
my knee jerk reaction is that the face is so "soft"
and in order to get the bulk of the dire wolf i would use cards to sim the fur
but i think its a great start!

Work on some more definition in areas like the eyes and ears. Detailing out the mouth could help too. Have you done much as far as muscle structure reference? I find that always to be helpful when working on creatures for creating proper muscle structures. Look up some examples of sculpted fur. Right now it feels a bit muddy. Your form and proportions are looking good. Keep it up!

One tip I have for mirroring in general that I see you have missed is that you should turn mirroring off before the brush cross over to the other side. You can see it clearly on the for on the neck where the fur forms an X at the intersection.

Try sculpting the larger shapes of the fur clumps before the individual strands, which can be handled with cards or alphas depending on the style. The wrist is a bit low and bulges out too much, it should be at least in line with the ankle. Here is a timber wolf skeleton for reference: 4778cb64708fa36f0e3188fea0333f25.jpg

The concave line from the elbow to the shoulder should be convex in order to imply the bulgy triangular form of the triceps brachii which connects from the lower edge of the scapula to the elbow.

One thing I learned from doing a horse ecorche is that the internet is just plain wrong when it comes to animal anatomy. Elliot Goldfinger has a pretty good animal anatomy book that also explains the individual muscles, so I highly recommend getting that.

I think it's coming along pretty well overall though. I like the face a lot, it has a lot of personality to it.

Darn! Unfortunately I was unable to pass the art test. He said he is not satisfied with the overall proportions. He said he will find someone else. I guess I shouldn't have asked where to hand in the ztl. Not sure if I should scrap it. Well can't make the same mistake twice :/

Yes, do try to get feedback when you feel done, people often notice stuff that the artist doesn't.
