Hey guys! I'm a 3D artist doing "hats" over in the Dota forum for about 2 years now (most recent thread http://www.polycount.com/forum/showthread.php?t=150871 ).

For the past months I've been dying to try something diferent than what I usually do (like try to learn Maya, animation, unreal etc) but I couldn't really make time for that. Another thing I would like to point out is that I'll probably give Android/IOS apps a try in the near future (with a coding partner).

A few hours ago I ran into this Kickstarter campaign: https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/2132274632/salto-captures-your-every-move-vr-ar-film-vfx-gami?ref=users
I've always been interested in motion capture but I've never really looked into it all that much. Could it be a good alternative for someone like me who wants to get into animation? Would it save up a lot of time? Are there any technical things I should know first before considering something like this? And should I consider the mocap suit from the campaign?

Congrats on branching out! People who are hungry to learn and expand their skill sets often go really far and have a lot of fun doing it =)

That looks like a fun way to do mocap, but be warned there is a lot that mocap can't do, or rather, there are a lot of motions that you will be unable to do properly and there will be a fair amount of clean up with just about any system. To bridge that gap you will need to be a competent animator.

With that said, the campaign looks promising and I hope they make it but I wouldn't rely on their tech or their method to get the results you need, I would only use it to speed the process up, a process you should be able to do on your own.
