Instanced layers in Photoshop?

Is there a way to make instanced copies of layers in Photoshop? Like, if I paint on the original the copies update? For painting a tiling texture it would make my life way easier.

I've searched and found nothing, but it seems like a pretty simple thing. Is this really a feature that's left out of the feature pinata that's Photoshop?

Well, you could use copies of Smart Objects.. the workflow is a little annoying, but that's what's available..
