Do you use Maya's lighting?

So a fairly simple question, just if you are rendering out a scene to make it look nice and what not would you use maya's mental ray and lights that you can create in maya? Or would you use some other program? I ask because i keep seeing on certain portfolio's or pictures where it has a whole list of programs that was used to render/edit it and didn't want to spend time learning about lighting for it if it's hardly ever used. Thanks!

I will use traditional lighting or add traditional lighting to a IBL environment.

So just so i understand right, you do use maya's regular lighting? And not a third party?
