So I have decided to dive into modo, but the interface is confusing to me. I have been using maya for years, but I am having trouble getting the hang of Modo. Are there any good tutorials out there to ease me in?
I came from Maya as well, it shoudnt be too hard to get around. First things first, set the keymap/navigation to Maya, if a window pops up with something about moving a modifier to shift, click NO. Then turn off the track ball rotation, this can be done when pressing O in a viewport or within the settings for a global change.
At that point, select the right tool for the right job and drop it when you are done with space bar. Its a tad different from Maya in that regard, but you can also set tools to autodrop after use. I recommend just getting used to dropping tools though, it will feel very wrong at first to use the spacebar to drop stuff coming from Maya but eventually it becomes the norm. For quick swapping of perspectives, control + spacebar is what you need.
Modo's version of the attribute editor is very...well it looks like its designed by a programmer... less visual input yet all the numerical stuff. It takes a bit to get used to but there are categories for everything and memorizing where they are. Expect them to be changed or polished more in the future.
The other challenge is getting used to the item list and the shader tree. Think of it more along the lines of after effects in that each layer can contain numerous meshes and they can all be parented within each other... as for the shader tree its no different. The shader you put on top affects everything below it, each group has its own material which over rides the global one, and with each layer you can create maskes which trickle down to the stuff below them.
Both complex and simple depending on how you use it, very powerful as well. Get get convoluted with larger scenes or just bad management.
