Currently in the process of modeling a car in 3DS. But one subject I rarely see is...

How do you model/make the underside of the vehicle and have it look good while also being game practical? If the car flips it will get seen so Im curious to figure this out.

Thanks!

Have you have owned a HotWheels or MatchBox toy car? If you were to take it apart you'd be left with essentially a flat tray and wheel wells. It's the same here, once you've modeled the car you can start by creating a tray and wheel wells that conform to the shape, and from there you can start cutting in the transmission well and exhaust well until you're left with a frame. From here you can just normal map and texture the underside with the exception of any major components...

If you're doing this for high-poly renders then it goes without saying that you'd model it in the same fashion that it is in real life. No difference.

Intresting. Ive tried doing the belly pan style method before, I can never get it to look very good >.>

Show your work and ask for critique. It's the best way to learn!

Alright so I gave it a go. Here it is.
I threw a turbosmooth on it just because but it doesnt have any support edges and frankly Im not sure how to add them to this.

Is this looking right? Or is there a better way that looks.. better. I guess?

Edit: Here it is by itself, not sure why theres weird pinching on the rear arches, considering theyre modeled the exact same as the front..
