Hi Polycount,
What do you guys think of sketching for 3D creation?
Im Pierre, cofounder of Gravity Sketch, a London startup where we develop new 3D creation tools based on a sketch input.
Our first beta is more of an easy iPad app for aspiring 3d printing enthusiasts. However, we see potential value in a pro desktop version working on the same sketching principle. Something like a plugin that fits into existing workflows/software.
Our goal is to help 3D artists to be more creative and we want to involve you in the development of this new tool, hence this thread.
Here is a link to a video of what the app looks like for now.

And a few models our community has created:

What do you think? Could this be useful for the styling? speed? for early stage of creation? creation on the go?
If any of you is interested, I'd love to have a bit of a chat over skype or something to understand how you work and how Gravity Sketch could evolve to be relevant to you. Shout me an email at
pierre@gravitysketch.com or PM me.
That would help us a lot!
Cheers, Pierre

It is a bit different from your tool, but I think it is a good example of the kind of innovative creation software that the community here might be interested in.
Simply put, here are a few things required for such a tool to be relevant to the 3DCG community :
- the app being available on Windows
- compatibility with multi-monitor setups
- compatibility with wacom tablets and cheaper chinese tablets as well
- Maya-style viewport navigation
- Traditional, Photoshop-like menus (File, Edit ... that is to say, no hidden UI and or odd UX paradigm shift in parts that do not require it)
- OBJ export
I think that about sums it up !
Thanks for this. I discovered IheartSketch a few months ago and think there is definitely something about sketching that could work.
Windows, wacom and Obj are already on our list, but your other points are really interesting.
Regarding the multi monitor setup, what situation did you have in mind? Do you prefer to have a standalone application on a dedicated screen while working on 3dsmax? Or more of a plugin directly in your software where you'd quickly create your mesh?
Cheers,
Pierre
There is nothing really special about the topic of multiple monitor setups in and out itself - It's just that most CG artists use 2 or more monitors on their workstation, and most if not all young painting software applications tend to have compatibility issues with that. The most common issue is the case of the painting cursor being offset from a few inches away from where the drawing application register a stroke. IIRC it happened with the early releases of Paintstorm, Mischief, Lazynezumi, and a few others.
Just something to keep in mind
I hope this helps !
