Upload Compression

Hey
Figured some people on here might know a fair bit about this, since I see stuff from PC members through image hosting like Imgur as well as on Artstation, and I'm wondering how some of the art posted seems to retain sharpness and clarity.

My uploads to Artstation and such have been ravaged by compression recently (though renders from Toolbag2 are nice).

In particular the City 17 Apartment images are really nice even when not on Dropbox.

Are there steps I can take to ensure my images don't end up losing that nice highresshot quality?

A lot of hosting websites have file size limits, if your image is above a certain size, it will compress the image for you. It's best to compress the image yourself to fit right under that limit. I haven't used ArtStation, but from a quick google search, I don't believe they have a clearly posted limit.

For imgur their limits are clearly posted,
The maximum file size for non-animated images is 20MB. The maximum file size for GIFs is 200MB.

Non-animated images over 1MB for anonymous uploads and 5MB for account holders will be lossily compressed. All non-animated images receive lossless compression that reduces filesize while maintaining quality.

Large GIFs will be converted to GIFV, which shrinks file size while maintaining high quality.

TL;DR: You can upload really large images on Imgur.

Basically for IMGUR, smaller images can be lossless PNG images, larger ones can be JPG with minimal compression.

I gave Artstation a test - smallish PNG vs JPEG, both seem to have way more compression than I'm happy with: https://www.artstation.com/artwork/gaming-basement-wip
(one has more brightness and contrast than the other, that's not an artifact :P)

But I do see Artstation images that look more or less crystal clear (e.g. https://www.artstation.com/artwork/scifi-bunk-room - I can see *some* compression around the coathooks for example). Am I missing out on a trick or technique?

I like being able to use an Artstation 'folio at no cost, but paying for a domain had the nice advantage of no image compression at all (I think, at least)
