If you REALLY don't want to merge them together, you could do the following:
1. Export a UV snapshot of one of your meshes (inside UV Editor->Polygons->UV Snapshot)
2. Create a material on your 2nd object which uses the UV snapshot image file as a color texture.
3. Open up editor an enable "Display Image". Voil
It's not clear what you're after. You want the two meshes to share a texture? Just assign them both the same material. You want a UV snapshot of both objects' UVs? Just have both selected when you take the snapshot.
If you select both the meshes, you can do whatever operations you want in the UV editor. Unfortunately, if you want to use the layout function to layout the UVs from multiple meshes it only works on a per mesh basis, and will give you overlaps.
