encryption software

Hey guys !

I have searched google extensively about ways to encrypt my computer, and bitlocker that comes on windows 7 ultimate seems to be the best solution, BUT i only have windows 7 professional edition and upgrading at the moment isnt possible.

I have seend lots of solutions to encryption but since i run lots of cloud software ( gDrive, dropbox etc ) i am wondering if it interferes at all , also if i will need to install windows on a separate drive.

Ideally a software that is simple and hasslefree to create proper encryption of my hard drive is what i am looking for .

Not exactly what you want, but related...

I've been using CrashPlan for cloud/local backups. They allow me to use my own long key phrase to encrypt everything, so no one, not even them, can read my backups.

Doesn't encrypt my working files though, which I think is what you're after. Curious if that slows down reads/writes at all.

Windows 10 professional is a free upgrade and has encryption built in which is bitlocker.

BitLocker Drive Encryption is a data protection feature available in Windows 7 Enterprise, Windows 7 Ultimate, and in all editions of Windows Server 2008 R2" no professional edition unfortunately , also on my computer its not there on my professional edition

Just FYI Bitlocker decryption keys are stored on Microsoft cloud servers, presumably to be used for law enforcement purposes or in case you forget the passphrase. You can expect it to keep out casual snoopers quite effectively but probably not the NSA or anyone else who's capable of exploiting Microsoft servers or bribing/fooling their system administrators.

If you don't have any top secret things to store and BitLocker is out of the picture then TrueCrypt 7.1a should be just fine for good while, in my opinion. It's been thoroughly looked at and probably better than randomly choosing another encryption just because it isn't TrueCrypt. (On the other hand it's of course more in the focus of hackers as well.) Just keep current with IT news.

it seems TrueCrypt is secure after the code was checked on the last version.
In my case, I use AxCrypt, this software can encrypt on file or all your files. It can encrypt a selection in a single clic (but all these files will have the same key).

I prefer encrypt files separately instead using a encrypted volume on my hdd.

Since when i work it automatically uploads it to the cloud , wont it upload the encrypted stuff instead of the normal files ? Ideally something like bitlocker would be preferable, that you decrypt it on computer boot i cant risk truecrypt unfortunately. Keep em coming guys !

i am pretty sure this is about offline theft, as in grabbing it straight from the harddrive

the amount of data we handle is a lot bigger than what you would like to handle with dropbox ^^

exactly ! i just want something to encrypt the hdd so that all i need to do is enter the key before boot and bam, decrypted. And like Neox said , its to prevent physical theft.

so far i havent found a solution

I don't know much about the Windows side of things, but the Fedora installer makes it easy as pie to set up encryption for your whole hard disk drive.

TrueCrypt 7.1a (the working version before the death of the project) works fine to me. But you need to find untouched setup files to be sure.
