It's been quite a long while since the last time I was around here.
Exactly 2 years ago I was a lost lamb doing some 3D for fun but here I was suggested to study some fundamentals and to do some 2D painting aswell.
Well guess what, after starting to do some painting I ultimately never went back to 3D and now I'm still painting, looking forward to get better and better
I wanted to spend few words of introduction as a thanks because without this forum I probably could've never found my way.
This is where you guys picked me up 2 years ago:
And here are some of my recent works:
I'll try to keep this thread up to date and I'd love to get some feedback to improve my craft.
Very nice progress !! Do you have some tips to make progress like you ? ( Like website or maybe what kind of exercises you do ).
keep it up
Thanks everyone!
I would suggest starting out with ctrlpaint.com and then checking out some yt channels (FZD, sycra, cubebrush, trent kaniuga, izzy medrano).
Now there are things that 2 years ago weren't there like loads of patreons and gumroad, but I'd suggest to start simple and not follow the "tutorial mania", save that for later on when you got some more solid fundamentals.
Do master studies, photo studies, life studies... lots of those! Break down the subject in smaller part and study them (values, colors, perspective, composition etc).
@Paloma: Really glad to hear that keep on practicing!
@xeoncat: In the first 6 months I was kinda struggling to keep up at least 4 hours everyday, with time I got used to it and until last december I was painting around 8 hours a day. From february to may I had couple classes and a mentorship and I was working 12-13 hours everyday. Now for summer I went back to complete lazyness and I'm just doing the commissions I get and the daily sketches
Daily sketches trying out the new fude pen. I used the "cloud approach": picked the theme (in this case "rocks"), put down some watercolor graphite strokes, smudged heavily to create a random shape and then inked on top.
For something like that there can be different way to go. I would start thinking about what kind of game you wanna design assets for.
Once you decide the theme, decide the specific asset (House, temple, bridge, lanterns, market stall or wathever fits your theme).
After this go look at tons of references! This is very important, don't assume you can create an interesting design out of your head for a start.
Once you feel you got some visual clues about your subject start sketching out ideas, at this stage is not important that you sketch in tight perspective or anything, just explore designs and see what would fit best in your theme.
After you pick a design, start blocking out the big shapes into correct perspective or rough out a 3D model, then proceed to do a clean linework on top and finally paint it.
...and most importantly, don't forget to ask for feedback during each stage!
have you used a 3d model for that bridge? The edge control is out of this world!
I need that portfolio builder. I had no idea ctrl+paint had something like that!
Yeah I made a 3D blockout and then I draw the final outline/design on top. For edges I mostly used lasso+pen tool to get sharp edges and painted where I didn't need those
p.s: if you ever need feedback feel free to hit me up on facebook
Painting from life for schoolism class, took about 50 min. Never painted still lifes before yesterday (yes it's stupid I know). I have to say it's pretty fun
What a thread! Your improvement has been absolutely phenomenal :poly115: Very inspirational! You have such an idyllic style - perfect enough that the images read flawlessly, but with so much warmth that I just want to stare at them all day!
Thanks for the kind words guys, really appreciate it!
Here a few daily sketches, atm I'm working on a second portfolio and I'll post more of that at a later date. Also came up with a challenge to paint 100 rock formations studies (gonna post it once I'm done with everything).
Wow, looking great. Love the colors and lighting! (PS; I didn't know you were here, actually. Sorry for leaving the 3d model of the bridge unfinished.)

Week 1: Comp studies, 30 min each batch of 3 (last one took prob 45 min)
Week 2: value comps from imagination
week 3 of pictorial comp
Nice to see your older stuff. Only 2 years? Impressive evolution!
Hey man, thanks! I felt the need to come back where everything started
here's a couple color experiments:
Very inspiring for those of us just starting the journey
new portfolio piece, working something out for a personal project:
Could you recomment any useful tutorials to make assets like these? Something for a beginner?
Tutorial wise there is this: http://ctrlpaint.myshopify.com/collections/color-texture-and-design/products/house-design-portfolio-builder
or the whole portfolio-builder package.
Below there's my process:

I had the pleasure to work on Rise of man: Stone age. Here is one of the illustrations for the rulebook!

Couple sketches, my 365daysofsketches challenge is coming to an end.
thanks man!
some new sketches and stuff:
I'm wondering where will you be in 2 more years haha
Here's another portfolio piece
(PS; I didn't know you were here, actually. Sorry for leaving the 3d model of the bridge unfinished.)
Going straight into my inspiration folder!
Here's a new one
