I learned a lot from Peter Stammbach. He has lots of short video demonstrating all kinds of shapes. He uses Modo but you can apply the idea regardless of software.

Are you trying to start with just a low poly and doing hand painted textures or making a high poly and doing retopo? If you're making a high poly I'd suggest using zbrush. Even if you're trying to do something very low poly and don't want to bake any maps it can help you figure out where to place your geometry.

Anything geared towards more for advanced or pro for modeling things. I just need to learn more stuff other then making a basic cube face.
