Second finished model: Toonish Whale feedback

Hi, this is my second attempt at modeling/texturing

the UVs were a pain to work with.

this is the whale



My goal is to achieve a look like this, the whale is not rendered and I know this maybe is with a toon shader.



Do you have any source on this image? did not find a thing

Any tips?

The look you are going for appears hand painted. The only sharp shading line on the gloves looks like a uv split with a different color for each half of the glove.

I guess you are going for a sharp cartoon look, maybe just as a study you could do some shading and gradient painting on the whale

In order to more closely match that style, I'd try to incorporate some clean gradients into the whale.

Thirding the gradients, depends on your UV if that's easy to do. : )

A different shade of blue or purple where the shadows or the lights would be would be nice.

Maybe some light pattern on the skin too, in your ref there is a bit of noise on the character's shirt, unless that's just the render.

And maybe cleaner lines for the mouth and eyes

any feedback on this is highly appreciated, about the cleaner lines, tried to, but the brushes on blender are very VERY blurry.

Maybe give it a darker shade on its belly to fake some shadows? But it depends if you want to use lights for your final render

Yeah, looks much better, but you still need a lot more contrast and shading gradients. Maybe baking out an AO map would help. You can see that on your style reference too.

your style reference definitely has some added grain in the texture. try overlaying a black and white paper texture on your whale. something like this
