Unlike most i sort of started super late into the comic world, like this year lol, I've always had a love for em(well reading in general) just never got a chance when i was younger(so nothing but books). Anyway lets get started:

I always go on Brandon Graham's PROPHET

now hear me out: It's the continuation of a Rob Liefield comic but don't worry about that, you don't need to read his weird 90's meathead comic about Image's Captain America-like. It's set 10,000 years in the future where clones of John Prophet (the aformentioned super soldier) make up the enterity of the Earth Empire that spanned the galaxy before falling.

It's weird, Moebius inspired Conan in space and one of my favorite series.

If you want a real bargain on another Brandon Graham comic, pick up King City, it's a realllllly thick trade paperback that's super cheap. It's a bout a master thief who's a trained catmaster - a special cat that he can inject with cat-juice to pretty much do anything. The cat is a weapon.

Another comic series I love is BPRD - the spinoff from Hellboy, you can pick up the 4 Plague of Frogs in 4 hard cover Omnibus's and after that follow it in the Hell On Earth trade paperbacks.

I mostly read Japanese manga only though. Some series online are pretty good IMO.

Kurogane - Kendo sports manga
Rurouni Kenshi - Classic. An ex- samurai now a Ronin adventure.
TATE NO YUUSHA NO NARIAGARI (Rise of the Shield Hero) - Kind of MMORPG
Mx0 - Non-magic user pretending to be one by bluffing around in highschool of magic users.
Kure-nai - Bodyguard/Mediator solving problem, I guess.
Sidonia no Kishi (Knights of Sidonia) - Scifi Mecha
Akame ga KILL! - Assassins overthrowing a kingdom
World Trigger - Organization defending Human from off-world aliens
ReLIFE - A dude becomes 10 yrs younger and go back to highschool again.
UQ Holder! - A sequel to Negima! Shonen fighting manga.
Yamada and the Seven Witches - high school drama I guess.

Some of the stuff I'm currently reading.
Onepunch Man. Guy trains every day, becomes a superhero, gets bored when he realises there's nothing that can challenge him.
Tough. Martial arts series, kid defends his family's style and tests himself. The power creep isn't as bad as something like Grappler Baki.
Hajime no Ippo. Boxing series, really fucking long.
Luther Strode. Guy buys one of those Charles Atlas magazines and unlocks his hidden potential, then finds out the other people who have done it as well as batshit insane murders. Currently on volume 3.
Invincible. Son of a superhero discovers his dad is supposed to conquer Earth.

The Scott Snyder/ Greg Capullo Batman run has been pretty good. In particular the Court of Owls was great. I love Capullos art style.
If you're a Batman fan, here are a few must reads- Batman:Year One, The Dark Knight Returns, The Killing Joke.
For some newer Marvel stuff, Thor: God of Thunder: The God Butcher is great and the art is really good. Uncanny and All-New X-men is good too.

For something a bit different, I highly recommend SAGA (Brian K. Vaughan), a fun, weird, sci-fi/fantasy, with some nsfw parts

can't leave out Batman: Year 100

I actually prefer it to The Dark Knight Returns and The Killing Joke. DKR just doesn't hold up when you approach it as a modern comic reader, you have to take in account that it came out during simpler comic times. I'm actually going to sell my copy of DKR because I find it a bit of an offputting comic overall.

Yeah Prophet is great. Just finished Fractions/Aja's Hawkeye, and currently reading Deadly Class, Black Science and Birthright. Image are killing it at the moment.

Yeah, Luther Strode! And the creators are awesome, too. I had done some strode fanart awhile back and they reached out to me and were very kind. Great story and art for sure.

Also check out Nonplayer, really fascinating so far and astounging artwork, although it's taken about 5 years for 2 issues to come out.

So these days I'm keeping up with

Batgirl, Gotham Academy, Coffin Hill, Black Canary, Southern Cross, Harrow County, Multiversity (which just finished like 2 or 3 months ago), and most recently I picked up the trade for The Wicked + The Divine.

I also picked up Starve, Neverboy, Silk and SpiderGwen, but for some reason or another I haven't really kept up on them.

As far as must reads, everyone should go through Demo by Becky Cloonan and Brian Wood.

I've read most of the popular mangas during highschool ( Death Note, Naruto, Bleach, One Piece and lots of others).

Eventually, as I grew up, I went past american comics (which are good but not that great) and started reading mostly european comics and grpahic novels.

V for Vendetta is one of my classics now.

You're missing out then! The world of western comics is much larger than Marvel and DC. Brandon Graham, James Stokoe and that general circle of artists are doing comics that are a blend of European, Manga and Underground Comix. The current comic creators are students of the world.

James Stokoe's most approachable comic is his recent miniseries [ame=http://www.amazon.com/Godzilla-Half-Century-War-IDW/dp/1613775954]Godzilla: Half Century War[/ame].
It's the war journal of a soldier who's been involved with the fight against giant monsters for 50 years.


I mentioned it earlier but King City is basically a manga with a lot of Underground Comix style subversive humor and little things hidden all over the margins.

Another good Graham comic is [ame=http://www.amazon.com/Complete-Multiple-Warheads-Brandon-Graham/dp/1607068400]Multiple Warheads[/ame] it has more of a Moebius meets Manga style. Just a warning that it started as a porn comic so if you don't want to see the main character sew a werewolf penis onto her boyfriend (hence the name multiple warheads, lol) just stick with the storyline called Multiple Warheads: Alphabet To Infinity

Justin, I tihnk that's my problem with americna comics, I've read a few actually and they focus too much on poor humor, boring action sequences (mangas are unbeatable at this) and poor character developpement.

Of course, not all of themare like that, there are still exceptions (the first edition of Kickass was surprisngly well written).

hahahaha Blond that is a ridiculous generalisation. Justin I keep meaning to read Demo, I read DMZ which started strong but tapered off a bit towards the end. Stoke's Orc Stain is rad as is I Kill Giants. Also Noel Stevensons Nimona is great, not sure if its still available to read online.

WHy is that mangas are so good at picturing battle and fights whenever other ccomics aren't?


GO back and read Dragon Ball or Naruto, just look how dynamic the fights, go read any Marvel or DC comic and even though the art is great, every panel just seems like a new opportunity for the artist to show off his posing skill and anatomy knowledge...

It's like they cannot make a still frame ''move'' like manga artists do..

This is not a vs thread or debate thread so no need to post what you dislike etc. I just want to see what comics people are reading or have read etc. And I'm sure this question has been done a billion times already, but there are great action scenes, character dev in every other comics just like manga as well as bad ones just like manga etc. it's all on the writer/artist. Hmm maybe make a new thread about that discussion if you want i guess^^.

Yes, it has made me cry man-tears at some parts

I was digging through my library and pulled out Paul Pope's 100%, it's surch a great self contained story that is all about character building. I'm not the greatest wordsmith so I'll just post this review snippet

"100%, on the other hand, is probably the most complete thing Pope has done, an ideal merging of his more abstract interests (the nature of creativity, the distance between people, the effects of violence on the people around it) with a warm humanism that makes you care about all of the characters in the book. Unlike Liquid, this is a more character-led piece that uses the more SF-trappings as window-dressing (which isn't to say that they're throwaway; the world-building Pope does in the book is impressive yet familiar) "

Always had an interest in hell boy, just never got a chance to read anything. But yea thanks man, i need to save up more and get my library started lol.
