Hello everyone!

I’ve got some exciting news for you. TGA Digital is holding a photogrammetry contest which is being being sponsored by Agisoft, the developer of the software PhotoScan. The contest in short is that you create a 3D model of a real world object using PhotoScan. If you haven't worked with photogrammetry or PhotoScan before don't worry. We've got a video tutorial that will go through the basics. Both beginners and experienced users are welcome to participate.

All you need is a fairly capable computer running Windows/MacOS/Linux and some time to spare. Agisoft offers both a demo and a trial version of PhotoScan which you can use to create an entry with.

Among all the entries in the contest we'll draw a Random winner. We'll also have a Community Choice winner where all of you get to vote on all the entires. Both of these winners will each get a license of Agisoft PhotoScan Standard Edition courtesy of Agisoft.

For full details see the “Details & Guidelines” document.

Future contest updates and announcements will be post on the TGA Digital Facebook page:

Here’s a video of me announcing the contest.

    Hey guys!

So we got 7 entries for the Photogrammetry Contest in total. Here's the Google Forms voting page where you can vote for who you think should win the Community Choice part of the contest.

The voting will be open for 48 hours and then we will announce both the winner of the Community Challenge and the Random Draw winner. That is on Friday at 13:00 UTC. Remember you need a Google account to vote.

    Thanks!

DataDragon> I can't give you any exact number in general to be honest. To me it seems like a diminishing returns. My latest personal projects I tried around 130 for a walking boot. I think it's overkill, but it turned out nicely. Would have been interesting to see how few photos you could get away with and still retain a given level of quality.

    almighty_gir> Doh :(
Kinda hard to get exposure on a thread here since it just disappears from the first page within a few hours sometimes. I posted it in the "Polycounters Unite" group on Facebook as well.

Thank you everyone who participated and voted.
Thank you Agisoft for sponsoring this contest with the prizes.

The winner of the Community Choice voting is... Christoffer Lindvall with his Ganesh statue! Christoffer's work got 37.7% of the community votes. The full results are accessible here: http://bit.ly/tgadpcv

The winner of the Randow Draw is... Robert Hunecke with his Gargoyle statue! We used random.org and did a roll and used a chronological list of the submission time stamps. We got a 4.

Congratulations to both of the winners.

    Have a nice weekend everyone!

Nice scan of the statue.. how many cams did he use, anybody know?

Cool! I'm sorry I didn't see this until now as well.

cptSwing: For static objects you only need one camera. Just take multiple photos from different angles. How many photos needed depends on the complexity of the item.

You only need multiple cameras if you're taking photos of moving objects, so that each photo fires at the same time and can be properly stitched without motion induced artifacts.
