Mudbox Editing Tiled Plane

Hello. I was just wondering is it possible to edit tiled plane from Mudbox to just make the centered area denser so you don't have useless geometry on the side. I tried exporting it as FBX and editing in maya to achieve something like this:
But sadly after you import it back it breaks and the tiling doesn't work anymore.
