Hello!

It's been a VERY long time since I've posted on polycount. I'm currently working on a model of Spider Gwen. I would love to get as much feed back as possible from the community as I would really like to make this a great model for my portfolio (which is in the middle of being revamped with newer models since I didn't have much time while I was working). It can be found at www.justinbettencourt.com if you're interested!

Enjoy and thanks in advance for the constructive criticism!

    Hey, I love SpiderGwen!
I would return her to an A pose and work on your sculpt a bit more, I feel like her face is reading in a mushy way rather than a solid anatomical way. Her hand structure needs a lot of work, Check out some Loomis stuff for help with that: http://kirileonard.com/wp-content/uploads/2012/04/PhotoshopSnapz004.jpg (just google or buy a Andrew Loomis book, or really any other anatomy help.)

Spend some time and really work on the structure of her body, it will be worth it! work harder and look up reference for the shoes and suit to get all the details in so they make more sense.

You might want to think of a better pose with more movement and attitude to show the character better.

    Good luck!

Thanks for the kind words Natland!

I will definitely spend more time working on her anatomy and facial structure. I like your suggestion on trying a different pose to get more personality. With the image you sent, I'm digging that bottom pose a lot with her right arm stretched out and back. Has more of a bad-ass vibe to it.

Yeah! I think it is really cute and interesting when she holds her hood.

Oh neat, I love seeing how people interpret Gwen's character. She has so much personality to play with and use in a model. I'll be interested to see where you take her.

As Natland mentioned, you'll likely need to revisit her face a bit if you're going to leave out her mask. You can try to head in a more stylized direction and sculpt by referencing something like J. Scott Campbell's Spider-Gwen cover art, or go more realistic and use a facial reference to hit a "likeness target" of sorts (can use anyone for reference really). Either way, she seems to be currently stuck in a weird mix of the two so it might be best to pick one or the other. The same can be said for parts of the costume too - you can go stylized or realistic, but try to nail down where it falls in that spectrum.

Don't forget to touch up her shoes too. The original reference sheet for Spider-Gwen mentions her shoes being a little more like Chucks (Converse) shoes, though for some reason lots of people draw them more like dancing slippers. Go figure.

And lastly the pose is really up to you, but I would recommend that if you decide to do the little hood-grab, give her something more relaxed/playful. The crouched pose is the one I used for my SG model because it has more of an animated vibe to it.

    Good luck moving forward. =)

Thanks for the feedback and kind words Rocket Brian! I checked out your Spider Gwen model on your portfolio and its gorgeous! Love the stylized anatomy! :)

I'm thinking of going more towards a stylized model, and agree that the face will definitely need some work to accomplish that. I'll be working on it some more today and will update the thread with changes! :)

Edit: I made some changes to the face. I really like Bioshock Infinite's art style, especially on Elizabeth face. I grabbed a few references and a few things I picked up from the references are:
    1) Bigger more round eyes
    2) a rounder face, more shape to the cheek
    3) The heads seem to be slightly larger than an average head size

Still working on it! But just wanted to share my direction. Any feedback on my updated thought process will be greatly appreciated. :)

Here's a new update for my model! I've tweaked the anatomy some more, and added more definition and details to the hands.

Unfortunately, I tried different poses for her and I wasn't really liking any of them. With the current model, I have this idea of maybe adding a web forming and shooting out from her wrist. I'd love to get some more feedback on the current version of the model. There are still plenty of texturing details that need to be done too (shoes, body, pink areas have blue web outlines).

There is some familiarity in the look of her face. Would I be wrong in guessing that I know who you used as inspiration?
