How to make those details

Hey guys, I'm sure that I'm not the only one who want to know how to make those handgun details.

The big question is he only texturise it or he did it in zbrush or 3ds max ?

This is the Picture of the gun and I putted the detail in the red Square line.

There's a number of ways you could do it. First guess is just hard surface modeled it in maya or max. Second guess is somethign simply like NDO in photoshop after.
