Thanks! Working on the first building, still need to do some FFD modifieng after unwrapping a couple more things Not too sure if I want to handle the roof this way...
I think its looking cool! Really like the sketch. Could use some angle variation in the structure of the model though I think, not sure if you were planning to do this or not after modeling everything. (Could maybe use a lattice to deform the entire model but it might not give the shape you want). World of Warcraft has some great examples of this in its architecture. Here's a concept I found from some googling, not sure who did it exactly but it has the elements I'm thinking of. Overhangs all have nice curves and even areas with straight lines aren't set up with 90* angles. Just something to think about
I've modeled out that concept before, I know what you mean I still want to conserve that Amsterdam-style building type though, but I'm going to warp the building a bit to match the concept. I'll also play with the shapes a bit more to make it more interesting. Thanks!
Me too, so I imported everything into UE, sorted the lightmap UV's, no fancy lighting or materials just basic stuff, got a lot more texturing to do and props to add, but really wanted to get this step out of the way and get stuff into the engine and learn the workflow a bit better..forgot to deform the red building a bit..till next time!
Make grass and tree color different shades of green for interest.
Your skydome should have a stylized look, the clouds shouldn't look realistic, I'd reference games like Super Mario World 3D and Sunshine, it'll push this piece over the top, I'd love to see same saturated blues and stark white clouds.
While the new tree is a huge step up from version 1.0 it has yet to find a pleasing silhouette, it's construction is fine, just needs to be tweaked (pruned, into pleasing shape).
Make the base of each building's first floor a darker shade of that color: ex blue building would have a darker blue shade only on it's first story. Doing this will ground the building more, and give it better visual weight.
Looks sweet ! +1 to pixelpatron's feedbacks. Maybe you could also add some ivy ? Overall your textures could use more color variations. Check out this thread with hand painted textures and some great advices from Faf : http://www.polycount.com/forum/showthread.php?t=141043&page=3
I'm curious to see what you have in mind for the global mood. Currently your lighting feels like it was taken from the ground, but light feels different in altitude (sharper shadows, deeper blues, more or less atmosphere haze depending of the height etc.). This could help you to achieve a more outstanding image. Keep it up, great work !
Such great feedback, thanks! I will reply to all of you tonight and show what I've done so far, gonna stream /paint more props now! check it out : www.twitch.tv/khazual
Here's this weekends progress, managed to keep working most of the weekend and I'm beginning to see where and how I need to improve now, also thanks to all the feedback on here and during streaming.
pixelpatron > Thanks a lot for the feedback! The skybox is defo on the to-do list and thanks for the ref! I've also worked on the tree (silhouette, and leaf color). Still not reaally happy about it so I'll keep tweaking.
DanielR17 > Thanks a lot! Trying to improve every day! I have a clothes line up there but wanna do something more visible with it
Hoshi > Thanks for that thread, added it to bookmarks. I'm trying to be more aware of gradients and color variations
And some props (I see a lot of saturation difference between the textures and will tweak this soon).
Thanks for taking a look, and also thanks for some of you hanging out with me on twitch this weekend
Some saturation tweaking, making the leafs more dense, texture repainting, worked on the skybox (still gonna add more clouds) and a lot of other small stuff, more to come and gonna work on the red building real soon!
love your work so far, just wanted to mention that your windmill concept is REALLY close to the one from Gorillaz music video for their song 'windmill'. I didn't know if it was inspired by that or not, thought I'd give you a heads up just in case you didn't know. I don't even know if it'd be troublesome copyright-wise, but I figured it was worth mentioning.
looking forward to watching more of your streams on twitch!
Thanks man appreciate it That sketch I really had Gorillaz 'el manana' in mind, awesome art and clip I'll be streaming moar tomorrows!
Some wip screenshots, still working on lighting, wall textures, skydome and feel of the scene in general.
Looks good
Kinda reminds me of the flying windmill in an old gorillaz clip hehe. 'Always thought that flying little houses were cool
My biggest worry is the sense of scale. Looking at the lantern post, barrels, windows, doors, crates and wooden axe, I'm not so sure what the scale of the character would be and what props has the right scale and what is not. I get that is a cartoony scene and you can exaggerate things, but still, it troubles me.
I'm not a big fan of the 100% black end/outline of the wood texture but I guess it's still WIP
Keep it up !
Thanks guys! Cremuss > I've added the wood fix to the list! Also I think it's a good idea to check the scale tonight, drag some character around the scene and make some tweaks. Thanks for the feedback! Streaming again in about 5 hours Getting closer with this project!
I've done a lot of small tweaks and feel like I'm quite content with how this 3 week project went. I've learned quite a bit and am ready for the next challenge, an Unreal Tournament map! Check my streams @ www.twitch.tv/khazual
A couple screenshots that will be shown on my portfolio, any feedback is still welcome and if it's really something I want to update I'll still do that, but for now I feel like moving on to something new will be a better level-up decision. Thanks for the great feedback so far!

Ronald, this work is great inspiration to me. Just a thought: Why not put some drying linen on a line somewhere?
Can't wait to see this finished!

Here is some clipart that might be easily editable or a good starting point
Happy painting!
