I have a mesh that I've baked normals onto but when I export from Maya and import to MAX, the normals are universally hardened. I feel pretty confident that I'm
exporting and
importing with the correct boxes ticked?
Also of note is that the engineering tools are designed for MAX 2012 so I'm stuck using MAX 2012 and Maya 2015. If I'm not mistaken, that breaks the compatibility for the "Maya to MAX" feature, given that they each have to be the same version?

I also use an older exporter on purpose. I believe it's the 2011 one. I seem to remember the new ones would mess up the normals.
For my personal stuff, I use Max 2010 and Maya 2012. The different versions shouldn't matter but check your fbx versions.
