I'm following this tutorial:

http://www.digitaltutors.com/tutorial/1976-Rigging-Hands-in-3ds-Max

But i'm curious about more info on rigging and animating first-person arms and hands. Is there any videos that you guys recommend? :poly142:

Also, which tool is best suited for beginners? Maya or Max?

As to the first question. Digital tutors is a good place to start, after that its all about practice and reference.

As far as maya and max, thats an age old question with its own can of worms, so Ill say this.

Both programs have their ups and downs and it doesnt really matter which one you choose because you can get professional results with both. You will run in advocates for both, and people who detest using the other.

If you are following a tutorial for 3ds Max, however it doesn't make much sense to learn Maya. But that being said I'm sure there are a million great tutorials for learning the exact same thing in Maya.

(thats about as good of a non-answer I can give you. what matters most is that you make art and learn the fundamentals of animation & rigging, and then you can apply that knowledge semi easily to any software.)

max vs maya. I`ll just give you my personal experience with it.

Studios don't care which one you know, as long as you know one and are willing to learn the other.

I started on Maya. It's what most animation studios use, and a lot of game studios are switching over to maya or mobu (motion builder), because apparently max is ramping down it's animation support over the next few years.

I can now animate proficiently in Maya, Max and Mobu. I used Maya at school, and at my first job. My second job used max, so I learned it on the job in a short time. My third job used Mobu, so I learned it on the job in a short time.

Animation skills are transferable. So it doesn't matter what program you use. Just pick one and stick with it until you`re required to learn another. Don't waste time learning every tool. Use your time wisely focusing on being a better animator. As long as you`re willing to learning other programs when required, you`ll get the job. "do you know max? No, I've never used it, but I'm willing to learn it and am confident I`ll be able to do so quickly". That's all you need to say in the interview.

There's not much each program CAN'T do that the others can. It's just about finding how that program does it. So pick a program and focus on your animation. If you`re already using max, stick with it. It won't bite you in the ass, or ruin your life. You just may stress a bit when it crashes for pressing shift. :)

Thanks a lot for the tips, guys. It really helps to know that i can transfer knowledge. I'll follow the Digital Tutors tutorials for both programs.

If you're looking for a good 3DS max tutorial's for animating TheAnimatedFlame has a good one on his channel. As for the maya or max question it's more about your preference, I use 3ds max and it works great for me, my friends use maya and say its great... It's not about the program you use it's about how you use it...

    Here's flame's tutorial

Are tools like BonesPro and Anzovin good ideas? I mean, do they work OK with games?

It all depends, Bones Pro you can export the skinning you made in bones pro to a normal max Skin modifier which works for games. I don't know about Anzovin so i cant help you with that.
