Other than the classic base mesh construction on 3DS Max/Maya, do you guys recommend any other weapon modeling techniques? I hear about ZBrush and Shadowbox:

    Wouldn't be my first choice but it's an option. Could always use dynamesh with different primatives or zmodeler, seems like box modeling is still a winner though. Just depends on what you're comfortable with.
