Hi,

I'm currently using maya student license for my personal projects. Let's say one day i wanted to take what i made and start using it in a game but i created the assets in maya student version, will i have to remake everything from scratch using the correct license for that? Or will it transfer with me? i know when i open a project it always warns me that the asset was created using student version. So I'm curious if i have to start over.. i'm currently a game design student which is why i'm using student version.

I did a bunch of research into this not too long ago and I figured out that if you make assets in student version then you can't use those same assets in a commercial project when you buy the license. So essentially you will have to redo the assets.

Wow that's really saddening. What about using blender with mudbox student version together? I don't exactly want to change my current workflow as i'm still learning so much in maya. Gah.. :[

Thinking of maybe working on props for portfolio pieces in Maya at least and using blender (which i've never touched) for personal projects till one day i can afford a pro license...

Basically anything that has touched a student version isn't allowed to be used commerically, even after buying a license.

If you're uncertain about the future usage of your work, get Maya LT and you won't have to worry about any of it. In reality tho, chances are that by the time you're in the position to use your work commercially, you'll have progressed so much that you won't want to use any of your earlier work.

Great point yeah.. For the time being though i can use maybe blender and Sculptris for personal projects? I don't know of any other sculpt and modeling programs that are free. As i use Maya for school, i don't want to completely forget about it and maybe just use it for making portfolio stuff.

I see that now, and luckily i'm just barely getting started with using it to make stuff for my personal game project. Though i put in a good amount of hours making 1 asset recently, i can learn from mistakes i made.
