Octane: Applying Materials

Hi, I don't know if this is the right forum to ask this, but I had some 3D models made, and I'm trying to use Octane to apply materials. On one of the models, I can apply different materials to each part of the model, but on the other one, if I try to apply a material to anywhere on the model, it just covers the entire model.

Do anyone know how to divide the mesh up so that I can apply different materials to each part? Is this something I can do in Sketchup?
