So i'm fairly new to the whole texture world and after teaching myself a lot of modeling, i need to now start on some texturing. However i've heard about 3D painting apps which are done just right on the model instead of getting the UV and exporting and importing etc. And i'm just wondering if there are any differences between the tradtional texturing or 3D painting, for example, if the 3D painting isn't acceptable in a production pipeline or something of that sort.
Also what are some good 3D painting programs? I was looking into substance painter.
Thanks for any replies!

You probably mean Ptex, it's not used in games and none of the engines supports it. Plus there isn't a whole lot of software that can make/ use them.
Ptex isn't, using 3d software that projects onto UVs (Substance Painter, 3d Coat, MARI, Blender...) is.
For game texturing there are Quixel Suite (requires photshop), Substance Painter and Designer, Photoshop, 3d Coat, MARI, Blender and many more (I would recommend to stick to the former ones.)
that's what I was wondering, if programs like substance painter were acceptable, sorry if I worded it oddly, but thanks for that I'll definitely check into those, but now as you said im going to be looking into maybe Photoshop and substance painter. I was just seeing if substance painter could be replaced totally, I guess not
We have some info here about 3d paint.
