How can I do this in Maya?
I am having trouble with cv curves. I am trying to create that shape with a sharp lip at the edge like the one in the video.

You have problems in creating the shapes:
or making the mesh to be used as an alpha?

I made you a video, it's faster to explain, taking in consideration that you know at least the basic of Maya:

I used Bazier Curves to do that, since I usually use them I find that I can control better the result.
To snap to the grid you have to press X and hold it down, or enable the corresponding icon on the interface.
The bump is quite easy, if you follow what I did and used the same parameters, you just need to add an edge loop here:
Then, select the inner edge loop, and with the move tool pull it up a little, subdivide with Subdivision Surface (shortcut 3), done.
Take some time to play with the various parameters and values to get the result you want.
