Does anybody know of some good digital painting lessons or videos for inspiration?
I'm looking to improve my digital painting skills to draw up concepts for characters and environnements. I want to do more designing than just simply modelling existing props or other peoples concepts

He was once featured in the Corel Painter magazine on painting an anime style scene.
That's another option for you to learn: go to your local bookstore and get a Corel Painter or Photoshop magazine.
They always have painting tutorials. If you're smart you'll be able to adapt the instructions to other programs like the GIMP, Paint Tool SAI etc.
and
are two vastly different things.
For painting, I would highly recommend this book :

This is probably the best book on the subject I have ever read, next to Norman Rockwell's "How I Make a Picture". And don't take the title at face value - it deals with much more than oil painting, and covers a tons of ground when it comes to how to approach an image and why - which of course applies 100% to digital work too.
As for concept/design work, working digitally is not a necessity and might actually slow down your progress because it might make you focus more on rendering than design. You'll simply need to get into the habit of carrying a sketchbook, making studies of things you find noteworthy, get familiar with a lot of art styles, research games and TV shows, and so on.
Good luck !
