Hard surface modelling and smoothness aren't used in games directly. As the wiki explains it smoothness is about creating either models for baking normal maps (and other maps) or for renderings. Those models are not optimized for games. Also soft edges are not related to smoothness.
Keep in mind - smoothing will significantly increase your triangle count as it turns each vertex into 4 new ones. Soft edges affects just how face is rendered, but doesn't add any geometry to your model.

I don't know, that last pic looks pretty awful. Lose the bevel and use edge loops, IMO.
