This is a quick question some might find stupid... i also didn't know where to put it.
But what would i need to work on to be a 3d character artist is drawing a core key skill? obviously anatomy is but what else is needed
Drawing itself is not necessary per-se. It's useful still, because it is the easiest medium to use to learn every thing else, anatomy included. Also the quickest way to demonstrate your idea to others.
just FYI, I think the general section is the proper channel for these type of questions.
to answer your question in a bit more abstract way: Art and medium are not the same. you need to be a good artist, and that might require learning many different mediums to get better, for example: I got better at drawing when I learned sculpting, I got better at sculpting when I learned modeling and better at design when my drawing skills improved, its all connected. dont think to much of what you cant do, just start somewhere and you will learn along the way without even noticing.
It also depends on where do you want to work. At most companies the art director choose what is important. And if he thinks that traditional art is a core value for each artist it is.
Because of this I would also say, do art in every medium. Everything will help you to get a job.
