I really respect Arc Systems Works for putting in the effort to pioneer this technique. I agree with him that games should put in more research into non-photorealistic artstyles.
It's been my dream to make something similar, but with cartoon graphics, for a game. I even tried doing the same vertex normal trick a few months ago, before I ever watched the video.
Perhaps when I finish my first or second real portfolio piece, I'll go back at this again.

between normal thief and edit normal tool it's always seemed pretty easy to me. I'll have to give it a try.
It doesn't even touch on things like the half orthographic camera.
