Making a rendering environment?

So I know you can digitally compose models into an image to sell its environment, but the best works I've seen have always modeled the actual environment with geometry.

See:

So my question to you guys is how has he gone about making the ground/environment. Is there a specific technique or workflow?

I'm amazed at how good it looks!

If someone could tell me how to do this then I'd appreciate it as I'm modelling an off-road buggy and want to create a 3D environment as such.

Well, as the main plate (ground) looks pretty simple he might have just tweaked the simple plane in 3ds max, and then applied a v-ray displacement modifier to it (with a displacement map). Then scatter the rocks and grass around (I would use particle system or standart Object paint tool) and possibly place some individually for more precision. I suppose that would be it ^^
