First Art Test, need advice!

I'm doing an art test where I'm supposed to create a character from a real world person, then stylize it to match game look. I asked the company if it's alright to change it from the reference a bit to make it a new character, as long as it's fitting in the style, and they said "yeah."

So, is it more important to make a character look awesome, and somewhat similar to the reference (Different expression, but keeping some features), or stick very narrowly to the reference? They did not specify how closely I need to match it.

It's kind of a big deal so I hope I don't fk it up by doing it wrong.

Appreciate any feedback!

I would not change the brief if it was my first art test. Ideally you will be showing how well you can technically and artistically produce an asset as directed by the brief. The fact that you want to change the brief before you even start says to me that you don't know how to move forward with the initial design.

I don't know what your skill level is but if you are starting out then I would advise that you stick to what they initially asked and use the time you have to get it looking as good as you can instead of trying to create some new character as a way to try to impress them.

    Good luck!

maintain as much of the original reference as possible. but if you can embellish a bit while keeping the asset easily recognizable as the person its based on, do it.

the industry is using big name actors for voices more and more and the expectation seems to be that the characters match the appearance of those actors. i'd bet that that's what you're being tested on.

    good luck

Hey good luck on the art test! I've takin a few and I agree with @klown Take your time and do exactly what they ask and do it to the best of your ability and then do it even better. I found this little piece read through it and you will get a good understanding of what @klown means when he says use the time you have. Use every minute you can use! Don't waste a second!

Read through it!!! and again good luck!!

Just wanted to say thanks for the replies - I'm going to have to redo the face to match the reference. I still have time, but I'm going to have to work like crazy.

I'll give an update how it goes.
