I'm doing an art test where I'm supposed to create a character from a real world person, then stylize it to match game look. I asked the company if it's alright to change it from the reference a bit to make it a new character, as long as it's fitting in the style, and they said "yeah."
So, is it more important to make a character look awesome, and somewhat similar to the reference (Different expression, but keeping some features), or stick very narrowly to the reference? They did not specify how closely I need to match it.
It's kind of a big deal so I hope I don't fk it up by doing it wrong.
Appreciate any feedback!

I don't know what your skill level is but if you are starting out then I would advise that you stick to what they initially asked and use the time you have to get it looking as good as you can instead of trying to create some new character as a way to try to impress them.
Good luck!
the industry is using big name actors for voices more and more and the expectation seems to be that the characters match the appearance of those actors. i'd bet that that's what you're being tested on.
good luck
Read through it!!! and again good luck!!
