Modular Galleon/Frigate

Hi guys,
I'm going into my final year of university next year and need an idea for a final year project. I came up with the idea of some sort of modular ship set that could be used to create multiple different 17th century style ships but I'm not sure how well this would work.
I'm just looking for different ideas on how I would approach a project like this. I have never created a modular building set so it probably isn't the best idea to to learn how to by doing this project but even so it's still something that interests me.
One of the main problems I can think of would be replicating the slightly curved shape on the sides that ships have as well as hiding the seams between the different pieces.
Any one have any advice on how to go about making something like this?
