I would like to share with you the first asset for my texture/modeling reel at Think Tank Training Centre. All the aspects were done by me. It was created with week by week guidance from my mentor Justin Holt and critiques from classmates and faculty. It was based off a physical Gas Mask that I own.
Software: Maya, Zbrush, Mudbox, Vray, MARI and Photoshop
I used VrayFur to create the fray on the straps and also on the mask! Then I painted a density map in MARI to control where I wanted the fur.
I textured the straps in MARI, using surface mimic (www.surfacemimic.com) displacements and then building more details on top to achieve the color that I wanted!
Here's the close up diffuse map if you want to check it out
Thanks!
At First I was thinking about using opacity map for it, but then when I applied the Vray Fur using the same diffuse map for the mask it worked perfectly!
paulhpaulino - opacity map ? Vray fur worked very well, what would the opacity map look like ? I've always found painting opacity maps for things like fine fibers such as fraying to be difficult, must be something I'm missing ?
CreativeSheep - Yeah, before trying VrayFur (which I didn't know how to use that well before) I considered adding some variations on the borders with opacity maps, but I'm pretty sure that the result would not be that good !

That is what I'm thinking as well, that it wouldn't be that good.

Just a small critique, the fray on edges of this object is too uniform to me, I would break it up a little bit
Would be also nice to see a higher resolution renders
Thank you for the comment!
You can check the high resolution renders here:
