Select: Draw>Snapshot To Grid - This will create a Front, Side and Top view of your reference model on the Grid. You could then append another object, say sphere, then delete your reference model in the subtool menu.
Before Hitting Snapshot To Grid if you put the RGB Fill to 0 - This will give you a transparent background on the Grid.
If you don't like the Plines, you can switch them off in the Draw menu under each View ie: Front-Back /Up-Down/Left-Right
If you want to alternate between the ghost like effect on your model play with the Fill Mode again in the Draw menu.
The E Enhance Factor and E Enhance Opacity in the Draw menu will also change your Ghosting Effect

You could also use the snapshot to grid feature.
Draw your reference model onto the canvas.

Anyway, just some food for thought.
