Any advice appreciated :) current WIP is the Metabee which I spent about 3 or 4 hours on so far since i'm new to characters and working out how to do things.

I plan to apply for a job at Animal Logic in a year or 2. Hoping to specialise in character modeling or environment modeling. Been in course about 4 or 5 months now and we don't start learning character modeling until next week.

Practice, practice practive practice. At your current skills level you are unlikely to get a job at Animal Logic. Put the nose to the grind stone and get chopping son

    It still needs work.
I find the fastest/best way to improve the quality of your work, is to find someone who is leagues above you and attempt to mimic their work. YOu ight not get it the first time, but as it goes one and you keep doing exercises you'll start to see an improvement.
Also dont forget to do short exercises to keep your skill level up.
    Good luck.

I'm a noob myself and the Monthly Noob Community Challenges here help a lot since you get to see how other people to it better and you learn new techniques. I suggest you get started with those.
And don't be afraid of posting your progress even if others already did the same thing a thousand times better.

    Hi OP,

Do you have zbrush? As it seems you said you might want to do character art.

But, can you join one of the monthly challenges. There is a monthly noob challenge, which is good if you want to go into environment art. There is also a monthly hand painting challenge.

No idea how to use Zbrush, they say we'll be shown the very basics at some point but not yet.

Get on it ASAP! It could be tempting to wait and see what the teachers will tell you but if you're planning to get into animal logic you need to be on top of your game. I'm currently still a student and I held learning zbrush for awhile, only to realize I should've started earlier. It took me about 2-3 months of making models to fully get used to the interface.

If your university (it sounds like you are in AIE) has access to sites like Digital Tutors or Lynda, start indulging yourself in those. Otherwise youtube has great artists with many free tutorials.

    Best of luck!

Sincerely, a fellow student from a neighboring university. (who is also planning to apply to Animal Logic within a year or two :poly124: )

Yeah AIE :D you at AIT? I tried AIT but 6 subjects at once was too much whereas AIE is 1 teacher and a subject at a time. Not sure if AIE has access to Lynda or Digital Tutors.

I find myself kinda lost when it comes to trying to think up what to make on my own haha. I have Aspergers and despite loving art and wanting to learn to draw or make Zbrush sculpts and all that, I have no idea why but when I get Zbrush open its like my brain dribbled out my ear and I just sit there trying to think of what to make.

I mean yes I love Ancient Egypt and also dragons but a dragon as a first project seems like a baby planning a world trip when he can't even roll over yet let alone walk or crawl. I haven't even got the ability to draw a line without it being crooked or wobbly.

Digital tutors is really cheap. 3d motive is also cheap.

I doubt it Aspergers that is stopping you from learning zbrush. A lot of art students only do what teaches tell them to do, I doubt the teachers have magical methods for you to learn zbrush so start now. Come here June 1st you should see a monthly sculpting thread. You can also look at weekly anatomy threads.

But, just pick a tutorial say [ame]https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4FlabvISKqM[/ame] and pick some images say https://www.pinterest.com/source/kxhara.deviantart.com/ and try and sculpt her heads. Then, put in the practice.

Nah I'm at Monash University haha, so I'm in Melbourne too. The course I am attending is quite broad in terms of digital art. It ranged from 3d, motion graphic, to painting and typography. I really was only taught the basic to intermediate fundamentals of Maya. Zbrush was never in there, and that's where they pointed me to Digital Tutors. Polycount too is a great place to learn, like pangaea said.

I think most unis in Melbourne have a Digital Tutors/Lynda subscription, you should definitely ask your teacher. I'd be surprised if AIE didn't.

Thinking of what you are going to make is a good habit, not a bad one. In the words of legendary concept artist Syd Mead:

"There are more people in the world who make things than there are people who think of things to make."

If you feel like making an Egyptian Dragon then go for it! But instead of trying to make the whole thing you can focus on say its head and really push your limits.

"Sometimes you gotta run before you can walk" - Tony Stark.

Haha feeling a bit quote-ey today. But bottom line is get on that Zbrush ASAP!
