Hello everyone. I am attempting to shift-marquee select a group of faces. Inverted selection in Maya 2015. For some reason I can not get this to work

I have isolated the problem to be specific the file i'm currently working with in 2015. In this file, I can select a group of faces in the UV editor, but Maya will not allow me to do any type of selection command to the currently selected faces in the veiwport. The opposite is also true. If I select a face in the veiwport, I will not be able to deselect it in the UV editor.

If I open a new file in Maya 2015 this is not a problem. I can select half the faces on a sphere in the veiwport and deselect them in the UV editor without a problem. This is how I can prove it's just specific to just that one file. I've been looking for the answers on different forums but most of the search results have misinterpreted my problem. I'm about an hour in research so I decided to ask the pros. Is there a file specific switch I need to flip somewhere?

As you can see in the image above, I have applied a red material that gets updated in the UV editor, but no red material shows up in the veiwport.

I know Maya won't let you modify your face selection if you have one of the UV editor tools active instead of the select tool (Q). This probably isn't your issue but it's worth checking.

    Standard fixes for Maya:
    - delete history, optimize scene and unparent from anything (if it's the case)
    - copy and paste object in new scene and see if problem persists (or export as obj and reimport)
    - combine object to a cube and then delete the cube (a dirty reset)
    - viewport 2.0 has these kind of issues (selections and material changes don't update for example), switch to default maybe?
